Diane Spell Catania, age 82, completed God’s plan for her life and entered Heaven on Saturday, March 2, 2024. She was a native of New Orleans, and a resident of Gretna for the past 52 years. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Cletus Catholic Church. She volunteered in many ways, including the adoration chapel weekly since it began. Anyone who met Diane knew how important her faith was to her.
She graduated from Annunciation High School (class of 1959) in New Orleans. Upon graduation, she worked for the Archdiocese of New Orleans and later Bredero Price Company as an administrative assistant. Wanting to continue her education, she received an associate's degree in the medical field. After retirement, she wanted to keep busy by substituting at several schools in Jefferson Parish. One of her favorite schools was Gretna No. 2.
She is survived by her three children, Kim Marie Catania, Michelle Catania Brady (Michael), and James Gregory Catania. Her family all called her “Nana” and her greatest joy was spending time with them. God blessed her with four grandchildren whom she dearly loved more than life itself, Kayla Brady Suffrin (Andrew), Katelyn Brady Monfrey (Austin), James Nicolas Catania, and Taylor Marie Catania. She also adored her three great-grandchildren, Drew Suffrin, Parker Suffrin, and Peach Catania, who always brought a smile to her face and happiness to her life. She was preceded by her late husband of 55 years, Benny Catania, and her parents, Josephine Spell Foto and James W. Spell.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at St. Cletus Catholic Church, 3600 Claire Ave. in Gretna, on Monday, March 11, 2024 from 10:30AM until 12:00PM. The Funeral Mass will begin at 12:00PM, and the interment will follow at St. Roch Cemetery No. 2 .
