

Dorothy B. Schmidt, 96 years of age, was born and raised in Gretna, LA and passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024 at her home in Metairie where she has resided for 75 years. She was the beloved mother of Leonard Schmidt, III (Cynthia P. Schmidt) and Cynthia Anne Schmidt (Randall "Randy" Roppolo); loving grandmother of Leonard Schmidt, IV (Ashley U. Schmidt); loving great-grandmother of Riley Grace Schmidt.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Leonard “Smitty” Schmidt, Jr.; her parents, John Fred Braun, Sr. and Josephine L. Braun; her siblings, Florence B. Rousselle (Alfred, Sr.), John Fred “Fritz” Braun, Jr., and Daniel S. Braun, Sr. (Barbara); her eldest niece, Charlotte R. Luikart; her long time very close friends, Lois and Fred Stromeyer; step-granddaughter, Ashley S. Conroy; Randy’s daughter, Kandice Roppolo.
She is survived by her beloved nieces, Sue R. Egan (Bruce), Glenda B. de Leaumont (John “Jay”, Sr.), Wendy B. Vonderbruegge (George), Diane B. Stevens (Kurt), and Denise B. Forbes (John); nephews, great nieces, great nephews; her former daughter-in-law, Cynthia G. Schmidt (Bobby); her cousin-in-law, Kathy H. Owens (Bob); her cherished close family friends, Richie and Mary Giardinelli; Randy Roppolo’s children and grandchildren, Kadie Roppolo (Harry Berggren, Jr.), Harry Berggren, III, Rachel Lanzas (Sergio L.), Gabriella Lanzas, Sergio R. Lanzas, and Marisol Lanzas; her step-granddaughter, Brooke Bass (Barrett); step-great grandsons, Beckett and Bowen.
Her greatest pleasure was spending time with family and friends. There were no strangers in her lifetime; only friends she had not met, yet. Her favorite things over the years were Scrabble, Hummingbirds, Wheel of Fortune, crossword puzzles, and reading autobiographies. (She also kept a Daily Journal over the past 30 years ever since her beloved husband passed away). The family would like to thank Dr. Robert C. Ryan and the Family Medicine Center, for his compassion and for his dedication to our Mom’s well-being and medical care. As well as Scott Wieber and the entire staff of My Hospice for their excellent care and professionalism.
Service will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 105 Bonnabel Blvd Metairie, LA 70005. Visitation will being at 10:00AM followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00AM. Interment will be at All Saint's Mausoleum.
