Dorothy Tackaberry Toman “Dottie” passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at age 100 years. She was the beloved wife of 53 years of the late Stephen John Toman; mother of Mary Ellen Toman McGuire (Donn) and the late Stephen John Toman, II; grandmother of Stephen John McGuire (Jocelyn), Tiffany Elizabeth McGuire, and the late Stephen John Toman, III; sister of the late Charles J. Tackaberry, Marion Tackaberry Brupbacher, and John Collins Tackaberry, Sr.; and daughter of the late Charles Peter Tackaberry and Mary Crowley Tackaberry. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nephews, and cousins. Dottie was born September 1, 1914. A native of New Orleans, she was raised on the Westbank. After marrying Steve, they raised their family in Gentilly and were active members of St. James Major Catholic Church. She devoted her life to her husband and raising their two children, and was an active member of the guild at the Mary Joseph Residence of the Elderly. Dottie enjoyed travel, but she also reveled in entertaining visiting family and friends by showing them the sights and atmosphere of the French Quarter, Mardi Gras, and other things unique to the city that she loved. Dottie always loved a party. After moving to Baton Rouge in 1993, Dottie became a member of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and was active in the ministry of the Altar Society. She looked forward to playing with her regular Pokeno and Bunco groups. Since 2006, she zipped around the halls of St. Clare Manor in her wheelchair, challenging anyone she came across to dare and keep up. In addition, she reigned as Queen of the Mardi Gras parade and was a member of the Garden Club. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the 100 Hall at St. Clare Manor for the loving care they have given her during the last 8 ½ years. The family would also like to thank Dr. Kevin Dean and the nurses and staff of The Crossing at Clarity Hospice for their loving care in her final days. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 12:00 Noon. The celebrant will be Fr. Jack Nutter. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic High School of Baton Rouge Class of 2001 Scholarship Fund (www.catholichigh.org) or to The Crossing at Clarity Hospice (www.palliativecarebr.org).
