Rusty Dixey of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away suddenly as a result of a fire in his home in the early morning hours of August 2, 2025. Born on October 27, 1950, Rusty was the eldest child of the late Edgar Bright and Josephine Jamison Dixey. He is survived by his son, Edgar Miles Dixey, from New Orleans and preceded in death by his daughter, Janey O’Neal Dixey, and his sister, Delane Dixey Taylor.
Cherished brother to Diane Dixey, Deborah Dixey, Deirdre Dixey Cootes (Randy), Minge Dixey (Tami), Devin Dixey, and Robert Dixey, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rusty attended Jesuit High School in New Orleans and received his master’s degree from Tulane University. He spent his life living and working in Lafayette, LA, El Dorado, AR, and finally returned to his favorite home of New Orleans when he retired.
Rusty was a native New Orleanian who enjoyed living here immensely. He loved his time at Jesuit and Tulane, and he worked in the oilfield for Shell during his younger days. He had a large, loving personality and a wonderful sense of humor. His passion for cooking was like no other, and he always had a comment on how YOUR cooking could be better. He was part of a large, loving family and will be deeply and profoundly missed by his many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, friends, and especially his best friend, his son Miles. Oh, and a very obnoxious cat named Smudge.
A visitation will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans on Thursday, August 14, from 10am to 12:30pm. A private burial will follow where he and Miles’s mother, Tammye Jane Hoover Dixey of Natchez MS, will be laid to rest next to their daughter in the historical section of Metairie Cemetery. The family invites you to share your thoughts, fond memories, and condolences online at www.lakelawnmetairie.com
