

Emanuel Peter Zammit, a long time resident of the New Orleans area, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 27th at the age of 99. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife June Keating Zammit; his parents Joseph John Zammit and Hermenegilda Culotta; his brother Joseph John Zammit, Jr; his sister Irma Zammit Perkins. He is survived by his daughters Patricia Zammit Cyrus (Louis) and Deborah Zammit Olavarrieta (Jerry); his granddaughters Stacy Cyrus Guerin, Jennifer Cyrus Lay, Rebecca Olavarrieta Wilson and Rachel Mary Olavarrieta; his great grandchildren Abby Christine Guerin, Hunter Cyrus Lay, Harper June Wilson and Zoe June Lay. Emanuel was born in Honduras on June 6th, 1917. His family moved to New Orleans soon after where he graduated from Samuel J. Peters High School. He would join the Merchant Marines and later served in the United States Navy as Lt. Commander during World War II, where he was stationed in the Philippines. He remained a Naval Reservist for many years. He was long time employee of Lykes Brothers Steamship Company from where he retired. He liked watching football and baseball. He enjoyed music and dancing. But the one thing Emanuel cherished most in life was spending time with his family. He was totally dedicated to providing, caring and supporting all of his family during good times as well as in times of need. He was kind and selfless. He will be remembered by all as a true gentlemen. A special thank you to the staff of Brookdale, where he resided the last two years. Also, thank you to Passages Hospice for their attentive care.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
