Erik Peter Daniel Kjorling, age 25, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 22, 2016 in the loving arms of his mother in Mandeville, Louisiana. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones the last days of his short life. Erik spent most of his life in New Orleans, attending Children’s Place pre-school and Edward Hynes Elementary, and then Mandeville Middle School and Fontainebleau High School on the Northshore. Erik was born with a rare genetic disorder, Cockayne Syndrome, and although Erik’s illness made him appear frail, he possessed incredible strength and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. With his courage and big heart, he taught us that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create memories. Erik loved music, dancing and above all, he loved people. He touched many lives- his radiant smile could melt the hearts of those around him. To Erik, no one was a stranger and his love for everyone was an inspiration. Erik is survived by his loving parents Ana and Peter Kjorling, sisters Katya Mata and Claudia Mata Gladish, brother Edgar Mata and his dog Bingo. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 beginning at 11am at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road in Metairie, Louisiana. Mass will follow at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations made in Erik’s name to www.cockaynesyndrome.org
