Gustave A. Manthey, Jr.

Gustave Adolphus Manthey, Jr. of Metairie, LA passed away at his home on Monday, January 30, 2023 after years of a courageous and stoic battle with cancer and surrounded by his beloved wife and children. The son of Jeanne Cotter Manthey of Austin, MN and Gustave Adolphus Manthey of New Orleans, LA, Gus grew up in Lakeview attending St. Dominic School. He graduated from Jesuit High School, Spring Hill College, and Tulane Law School and practiced law in New Orleans for over 35 years.

Gus was the steadfast husband of Elizabeth Gibbens Manthey for 47 years; proud father to Katherine Manthey (Daan), Trey Manthey (Kathryn), Meg LaBumbard (Jason), Sarah Manthey Elmalem (Yoni); and loving “Cap” to nine grandchildren. He is survived by his immediate family as well as his three siblings: Margaret Cooper (David), Martin Manthey, and Richard Manthey (Lisa).

Gus took great pride and joy in his family and enjoyed tracing his lineage through the backdrop of New Orleans, including the Streckfus steamboats on the Mississippi River, coffee trading in the Marigny, the founding of NOLA Box and the development of Lakeview. He was a dependable and hard-working man who always had an agenda and route planned, a map ready, a car ready to loan and a hand ready to lend.

After he was introduced to sailing as a teenager in the Sea Scouts, it quickly became a favorite pastime and inspired his profession as a maritime attorney. Gus remained forever grateful for the opportunities that allowed him to enjoy and share his lifelong love of sailing with family, friends and new acquaintances.

Gus will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors and fellow sailors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to Jesuit High School or the American Cancer Society. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Dominic Church on Tuesday, February 7 at noon. A visitation will be held from 10 am until Mass begins. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park.
