James Edward Melvin, Sr. transitioned to heaven on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at the age of 101 (1 day shy of 102). He was known as Dad, Papa, Uncle Edward, Ed, and Mr. Ed. He was an amazing model of quiet strength, moral character, patience, generosity, kindness, grace, and love. He offered wisdom using few words. He was a hard worker, talented electrician, baby whisperer, and was quick to laugh. Papa was devoted to God, family, country, fishing, gardening, and cards.
He was born in Chipley, Florida on December 8, 1923. At 17 he joined the navy to do his part for his country in WWII. When stationed for training in San Diego, he was asked where he would like to go. His response was “anywhere that is not cold”… so they sent him to the Aleutian Islands. After his tour of duty, he worked for Military Sea Transport. When he moved back to Louisiana he worked for Avondale Shipyards until he retired in March of 1986. He then started his own company, JEM’s Marine Electrical Service. He retired again 17 years later, this time to the back yard raising vegetables and flowers. Life was good.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Ethel Leas Melvin -. He is survived by his daughters Barbara Smith (Jeffrey) and Darlene Taylor (Kevin); his son, James Melvin, Jr.; his grandchildren Morgan Dore (JJ), Elsbet Hollywood (Tim), Evan Mickleberry, Alison Smith, Erin Campbell (Adam), and Adam Taylor (Darlene); and his great grandchildren Madison Campbell, Harrison Dore, Baker Hollywood, Harper Dore, Knox Hollywood, Maui Taylor, and Beau Dore.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for James on Saturday, December 27, 2025 held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be from 12:00pm until the service begins at 2:00pm. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park.
