James “Jim” Dunlap Ray, age 69, peacefully passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2025, after a brief illness. Born and raised in River Ridge, Jim was a beloved son, husband, brother, and friend whose zest for life and devotion to his community touched all who knew him.
Jim grew up in River Ridge and attended St. Martin’s Episcopal School, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed his signature charm. He began his college years at the University of Mississippi, remaining a devoted Ole Miss fan throughout his life, even after returning home to New Orleans and graduating from the University of New Orleans.
Jim dedicated over 40 years to a successful career in financial planning and counseling. As a partner and original member of Retirement Plan Advisors, which he helped found in 2000, Jim was widely respected for his expertise and integrity. His leadership extended beyond his professional life, earning recognition in numerous civic and social organizations committed to bettering the community.
A passionate and active member of his community, Jim served as President of the Rotary Club of Metairie and remained a committed member for 23 years. His leadership also extended to the New Orleans Medical Mission Services, where he sat on the board of directors and meticulously managed the organization’s finances. Jim traveled globally with the group, bringing hope and support to underprivileged communities.
Jim’s sense of fun and camaraderie was legendary. As a Lieutenant in the Krewe of Cork, he led, wrangled, and toasted hundreds of Krewe members, always inspiring joy and laughter. He was the driving force behind the formation of Debouche NOLA and served as an officer for the New Orleans Chaines des Rotisseurs, capturing countless memories with his candid photography and infectious spirit.
Jim was known for his ability to lift spirits, make people laugh, and bring joy to every room he entered. As Debouche NOLA so aptly stated, “If you had the privilege of knowing Jim, you undoubtedly experienced his infectious zest for life— he was always the one cutting
up, sharing stories, and having fun. Jim had a gift for lifting spirits and making people laugh, no matter how challenging their day might have been.”
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Janice Humphrey Ray; his mother, Jane Anderson Ray; his sister, Lucy Dubus; and his beloved feline companion, Cleo. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John E. Ray.
