John H. Onstott, born December 27, 1944 in Santa Ana, California, passed away peacefully at home on June 28, 2023. An avid sportsman and athlete in his early years, he found his true passion for competition in duplicate bridge in the late 1960's. This would prove to be a life-changing decision. With a background in banking with the Bank of America, John decided to move south and start his own financial business in New Orleans in the 1970's. His bridge travels soon took him to Alabama, where he met his future wife, Eleanor Clark. They were married for 43 years, until his death.
His unyielding determination to win was assuredly acknowledged by all who knew him. He was often sought after for business and bridge advice and was rarely off the mark in either. This acumen and determination resulted in his becoming a nationally and internationally renowned bridge player who accumulated 33,000 masterpoints as well as three North American, one Central American, and two World Bridge titles. Known for his high standard of ethics, John mentored players of all abilities during his long and successful bridge career, instilling in them his love of the game.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Francis; his 3 brothers, Frank, Charles, and Michael; sons, John Eric (Jodell), Jeffrey (Marcela), and David Alexander; daughter, Jennifer Nall (Tad); and his 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his father, Francis M., and his brother, Gerald.
The family would like to acknowledge John's longtime friend and companion, Manuel Sims and Ms. Bobbee Weiskopff, Ryan Jobert, and the staff of Diagnostic Management Affiliates for their loyalty and devotion. Special thanks to Heart of Hospice and to John's wonderful caretakers, Jessica and Anna.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday, July 14, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., with interment to follow at All Saints Mausoleum.
