Larry Schirling, a veteran WWL-TV news photographer, passed away suddenly at his home in Covington on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the age of 62. A native New Yorker, he graduated from Loyola University New Orleans in 1974. After working at WLOX TV in Biloxi and WALA TV in Mobile, he returned to New Orleans in 1984, beginning a career at WWL that spanned 30 years. Creative, funny and talented, he had a style all his own and a dedication to his work that will be deeply missed. Larry could always pull out the smallest visual details, bringing nuance and meaning to any story. Larry was devoted to his family and took the greatest joy in his children (just ask the reporters who spent hours on the road with him!). He was full of interesting anecdotes and remembered funny stories that happened years ago, long forgotten by almost everyone else. Along with his video work, he produced a remarkable catalogue of vibrant and energetic still photography, and was hoping to devote much more time to it in the years ahead. Now we can only wonder what he may have had in store for us. A devoted friend and unparalleled father, Larry had a quick, biting wit and a heart of gold. He is survived by his children Erica and Matthew.
