Lois Usner Stromeyer, age 96, passed away on Sunday, December 19 at her Metairie home with her family and caretakers by her side. She joins her husband of 77 years, Frederick Stromeyer, who she celebrated life with every day and cared for lovingly before he died last year.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Lois is survived by her three children: Wayne (Cheryl), Gary
(Ann) and Judy (Marc Weitz); her seven grandchildren: Erik (Carolina), Jennifer (John Gilmore), Cliff (Helen), Stephanie (Joe Gibney), Sara (Brian Porter), Matthew (Huyen) Weitz and Michael (Zandy) Weitz; and her fourteen great-grandchildren, Freddy and Alan from Erik; Luke and Leah from Jennifer; Owen, Will, and Margaret from Stephanie; Carolyn and Evelyn from Matthew; Elliot, August, and Owen from Michael; and Gabriel and Eloise from Sara. Along with her husband, Fred, she is preceded in death by her parents John Anthony Usner, Sr. and Thelma Schillinger Usner, her sister Mary Richter and her brother John Usner, Jr.
The family would like to give special thanks to all of her caretakers who became like family to them, including Leysly, Maria, Sherree, and Tina who were with her for many years.
Lois graduated from Ella Delonde High School as valedictorian with a scholarship for college. She turned it down to marry Fred, her high school boyfriend, when he was on furlough from the U.S. Army during World War II. Although they could not see each other for years, they kept in touch with letters that often took weeks to receive. While Fred was away, she served her country as well as a civilian working for the government. They were proud members of The Greatest Generation. She also held positions as a stenographer and a hospital receptionist.
As a homemaker, Lois’ focus were her children. Their families were the joy of her life. Her hobbies included traveling with her husband Fred (together they visited 48 states), aerobic dancing every week until her late 80s, and attending every LSU game.
Lois made friends wherever she went, keeping in touch with people throughout the country her entire life. Many say she touched and even changed their lives, including her extended family and caretakers. Her children and grandchildren were inspired by her and attribute much of their success to her as their role model.
Services will take place at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 105 Bonnabel Blvd, Metairie, LA 70005, on Monday, December 27th.There will be visitation and eulogies starting at 10 a.m. followed by a 12 noon funeral Mass celebrated by Father Andrew, Parochial Vicar.
With the expected presence of unvaccinated children and adults at increased risk, the physicians in the family request that all in attendance properly wear masks for the services
We hope to be able to have a “Celebration of Life” for both Lois and Fred in the future.
