Ray always prided in  quietly helping others never expecting anything in return. Ray was the epitome of a Catholic man who practiced and openly professed his faith all of his life. He actually lived and walked daily in his Catholic faith as his mother did.
    Ray had very definite political views and opinions and loved his Country. He was always outspoken as his dad was about these issues. He was always proud of his dad's naval  service to our Country in WWII.
       Each of us is fortunate to have had the opportunity to share in the life of this "real" superstar and "authentic" role model who was just a simple man with great humility. 
       We will each remember the very special way he touched our lives and the place he continues to hold in our hearts. Our dear friend will be missed more than any amount of words or multitude of tears could ever express.
        Shorty passed away alone at home in her sleep as Ray did. There is no doubt that she probably came to bring her Son safely home on March 10, 2021, as she did that day on Airline Highway , 72 years ago.
       I visualize many heavenly angels accompanying Ray Mart on his new and final journey into eternity as our Blessed Mother wrapped him in Her Mantle of love and protection of which Ray is so deserving.

I am proud and honored to share memories of Ray Mart. He was truly a unique and special individual who was fortunate to have had extraordinary parents Bob and May (Shorty) Mart
    The Himel and Mart families have always been among the most well respected and hard working families in the entire State of Louisiana where they  resided in St. James Parish along the River Road and Mississippi River. 
      They raised their children with love, discipline, strict work ethic and high morals.
        Shorty always shared a particular story about Ray. In 1948, she was driving down Airline Highway with Berta in the passenger seat and Ray  (then 2 years old) and Dickey (then 1 year old) in the back seat. There were no safety measures back in the day such as carseats or seatbelts . The back door of the car flew open and Ray leaned over to close the door to protect his little brother , Dickey. The wind hurled Ray out of the car and onto the oncoming traffic on Airline Highway. Ray ran to the neutral ground where he stood crying and waiting for Shorty to come around and get him. After that incident, Shorty nicknamed him "Mansie" because she said he proved to be more of a man than a little boy at the age of two years old .
     One week before his death, Ray expressed his recognition and deep appreciation for having had the benefit and fond memories of  having such  good parents and many Aunts, Uncles and cousins, all of which played a significant role in his life.
       Ray absolutely adored his sister Roberta (Berta). Bob nicknamed her "Boots" when she was born. Ray dearly loved his brother, Richard (Dickey) and respected his many accomplishments throughout his life. He always referred to Dickey as "Brother". Ray often spoke of his niece, Nichole and nephew, Derek with extreme pride and admiration.

Ray had an infectious smile.  A smile that came straight from his heart.  It was an honor to know Ray and serve with him on various Kiwanis projects.  He will be missed by all.

I met Ray when he joined the Kiwanis Club & loved volunteering in the community with him. I also sat by Ray every Sunday mass at St. Peters Catholic Church for the last few years. I loved having a church buddy & I'm very sad the world lost a sweet soul. He loved god & I know he's home with our father.  

Ray will definitely be missed in our community. He always was there to help   businesses prosper  and also  caring for the well-being of others. We will miss you Ray⚜⚜

I’m so sad to see that Mr Ray passed away. Our paths often crossed in and around Mandeville. Ray always greeted me with a big smile and kind gesture. I’m praying for God’s Grace during this tough time as I extend my sincerest condolences.

Ray was the best brother that anyone could ever have: thoughtful, caring, respectful and always willing to listen to your problem.  He always had a smile and a positive attitude.  We had many great memories together and I will miss him dearly.
