With deepest sorrow, we share the news of the passing of Robert Charles Schmitt, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 67. He is leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 29, 1957, Robert dedicated 30 years of his life serving the City of Slidell as an Assistant Superintendent before retiring. His commitment to public service continued as he transitioned to a role as School Crossing Guard Supervisor for the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, further demonstrating his caring nature and dedication to the safety and well-being of others. He was also a proud member of the Irish Channel Corner Club, where he fostered many cherished friendships.
Robert’s life was a testament to the power of family. His marriage to Royanne Cina Schmitt spanned 45 beautiful years, a testament to their enduring love and commitment. He leaves behind a devoted family: his children, Gretchen Lisbeth Schmitt, Robert Charles Schmitt (and wife Danielle), and Tara Lynn Schmitt; his cherished grandchildren, Luca Joseph, Liam Charles, and Lane Robert; his mother, Elaine Schmitt (and husband Bill); siblings Randy Schmitt (and wife Angie), Lisa Schmitt, and Lori Lemoine (and husband James); sister-in-law Robin Auer; godchildren Nicole, niece Maci, and niece Angelle; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Bilin, Chad, Jack, Alissa, Denise, Sally, Isaiah, and Johnny. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Charles Schmitt, Sr., and nephew, Adam.
Those who knew Robert will remember his infectious laugh, his comforting presence, and his unwavering support. He was a man of quiet strength, the steadfast "rock" of his family, always ready to lend a helping hand without seeking recognition. His passions extended beyond his family, encompassing his love for the beach, the invigorating smell of the salty air, and the soothing rhythm of the ocean waves. He found joy in simple pleasures: cheering on the Saints, LSU, and Tulane, enjoying lively music, dressing festively for holidays and parades, and most importantly, celebrating with his loved ones at family gatherings.
A visitation will be held to celebrate Robert's life on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, beginning at 11:00 am. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm, with interment at Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum. To honor Robert's love of the beach and his vibrant spirit, the family kindly encourages that guests wear tropical attire. Let us come together to remember and celebrate a life well-lived.
