On a beautiful fall afternoon, October 14, 2024, the angels came to escort Tomasina Geraldina Silva Landry to her eternal home at the age of 101 where she was reunited with her dearly beloved husband of nearly 62 years, George Landry, who passed away on February 26, 2007.
Born in 1923 to Edward J. Silva and Isabel Castillo Silva Rubio in Flagstaff, AZ “Tommie” spent the majority of her life in Van Nuys, CA playing sports and engaging in other outdoor activities. She and George began their love story when they met during World War II while he was temporarily stationed in San Diego. They married on March 19, 1946 and settled in Metairie, Louisiana to begin their family and careers. Two weeks before her 91st birthday, Tommie moved to Sugar Land, Texas to be close to family.
All who knew her would agree she had a vivacious personality and loved people. The legacy she leaves behind will reflect her acts of giving, sharing, caring, compassion, and always serving others’ needs. After working for many years at Pan-American Life Insurance Co. and for D. H. Holmes in New Orleans as an administrative assistant, she did volunteer work at East Jefferson Hospital in the Elder Advantage Department for 15 years. She believed in exercise throughout her lifetime and once took a belly dancing class, Yoga, Qigong, and Tai Chi and remained in senior exercise classes while also faithfully attending a weekly bible study class, and a church service every Sunday at Brookdale Independent Living Facility, where she resided for the past 10 years.
Tommie is preceded in death by husband, Ulysses George Landry, daughter, Linda Landry Chaix, sister, Edna Silva Smith of Yucaipa, CA, half-brother, Edward Silva, and granddaughter, Melanie Lynn Roxburgh of Metairie, LA. Surviving Tommie is her daughter, Karen Landry Guidry (JP “Jay”) of Sugar Land, TX, and son, Michael George Landry of Pasadena, CA, a half-brother, Daniel Silva, and granddaughters, Jennifer Philips Tonglet, Stephanie Philips Pettit, Ginger Guidry Leal, Holly Guidry Wright, Meredith A. Landry, Lauren T. Landry, and grandson Jesse M. Landry, as well as 15 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 10:45AM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM. The interment will follow the chapel service at All Saints Mausoleum (in Metairie Cemetery).
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tommie’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
