Leora Vaughn, 86, of New Port Richey, passed away on February 19, 2013 at the Marliere Care Center surrounded by her loving family. She fought a valiant battle against cancer and has now entered into peace.
Born in a very small town called Decoy, in Breathitt County, KY, on March 24, 1926, Leora moved to Starke County, Indiana at the young age of 2 years old. She was raised up in the Baptist faith. Leora was an industrious woman who held many jobs throughout her life. She worked in an American Home Foods plant, helping to manufacture such canned goods as Chef Boyardee. She also worked at the Knox Hospital, and later in life became a caregiver to the elderly.
Leora married her first husband, Glenn Beem, (a farmer, US Steel and Studebaker worker, and WWII veteran), on December 20, 1947, spending just over 50 years together and having 4 wonderful sons, until Glenn passed away on August 7, 1998. In the late 70s, she and Glenn began making yearly trips to Florida. Leora decided to make it her permanent home upon his passing.
Leora would find love once more with her second husband, Chester J. Vaughn, (a retired Air Force Master Sgt and a participator in the Berlin Airlift). She and Jim married on January 8th, 2000, and spent those golden years traveling whenever, and wherever they could. Jim is a part time resident of Henderson, NV, so when they weren't in New Port Richey, or traveling, that's where they could be found. Leora joined the American Legion Auxiliary in Henderson, Post 40. Leora loved spending time with her family and her loss will certainly be felt by all who knew her.
Leora was preceded in death by: parents Minus and Eva Bradley; husband Glenn Beem; brothers Joe Bradley, Willis Bradley, Harles Bradley, Preston Bradley and Ellis Bradley; and sisters Dovie Allen, Polly Winfrey, and Ocie Disho.
She is survived by: husband Chester "Jim" Vaughn of Henderson, NV; sister Hazel Winfrey of Kankakee, IL; sons Roger Beem (Donna) of Port Charlotte, FL, Ronald Beem (Erline) of Valdosta, GA, Roland Beem (Kathy) of Smithfield, VA, and Russell Beem of Germanton, NC; Grandchildren Heather LeDuc (Mark) of Venice, FL, Darren Beem of Port Charlotte, FL, Tyler Beem of Portland, OR, Chelsea Sinsabaugh (Chris) of Indianapolis, IN, Chris Beem of Valdosta, GA, and Gavin Beem of Milwaukee, WI; Great Grandchildren Wil Sinsabaugh, Gabriel LeDuc, Charlotte Sinsabaugh, and Jonathan LeDuc; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at North Meadowlawn Funeral Home on Thursday, February 21st, at 2pm. Rev. Gilbert A. Kuehn of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate.
The family has asked that donations be made in Leora's name to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
