Obituary of Janet J. Stout
Janet Stout, of Newburgh, IN, let go and her spirit soared, April 19, 2017. She was born January 26, 1938, in Webster County, KY, moving early in her life to Hazard, KY. Janet earned a full scholarship to Transylvania University, where she received a Bachelor Degree in Theater Arts. Arriving in New York City, Janet started her career as a stewardess for Pan American Airlines. Seeing the world, she then landed in California and worked on the ground for TWA. At age 40, Janet returned to school and earned a degree in Fashion Design from UCLA. She worked as a costumer on many stage, screen and television productions. Progressing in her career and starting at the ground floor, she began her employment with American Costume, one of the premier period wardrobe companies. Janet retired from American Costume in 2003 as President. Among Janet’s passions was the restoration of the Bates-Walden home in Historic Newburgh. She loved the community and was active in the Newburgh History Club. Utilizing her period costume knowledge, Janet participated in Newburgh Historic Theater and Newburgh Celebrates Christmas. She was a textile advisor for the Newburgh Museum. Janet was preceded in death by her father, John C. Stout; mother, Lillian R. Stout; and brother, Otis Stout. She is survived by her sister, Johnni Stout and husband, John Leanitt; nephews, Jesse Southerland (Jenna), and John Stout; niece, Johanna Spry (Charlie); great nieces, Lily and Emily; aunt, Elizabeth Ashby; and many cousins. Beloved friends include Julie Blevins, Lori Lynch, Luster Bayless, Brian and Lezlie Ward and their children, Johnathan and Suzanne who Janet loved as grandchildren. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held this Summer at Sassafras Grove, Webster County, KY. If desired, contributions may be made to the Newburgh Museum, 2 W. Main St., Newburgh, IN 47630 in honor of Janet.
