He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Newburgh. Marvin retired after 36 years of service with Northwestern Mutual as Managing Partner. He shared a love of auto racing with his sons and grandsons. During his retirement, he enjoyed classic car collecting and restoration. Marvin was a founding and active member of the USI Varsity Club. He and his wife, Joan, both believed in the value of higher education and a scholarship in their name will be established through the financial planning put in place years ago. As a member of the Warrick County Community Foundation Board, Marvin looked to the future of Warrick County and the community through the many worthwhile efforts the Foundation supports.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joan B. Smith; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Vivian (Norman) Miller, Amy (Dan) Kennedy, Laurie (Tom) Miller and Susie (Dan) Hirsch; sons, David Smith and Jason (Brooksie) Smith; grandchildren, Joshua and Curtis Miller, Carrie Rice, Jacob Madden, Sarah Sandefur, Rachael Virgin, Amy Jo and Beth Ann Smith, Steven and Scott Miller, Timothy and Anna Hirsch, and Ethan and Darcie Smith; great-grandchildren, Miles Murphy, Harper Madden, Simone, Tait and Calvin Miller, Leena, Vincent and Norah Rice.
Funeral Services with be held 10:00 AM, Friday, October 28, 2016, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Rev. Dan Kennedy, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Warrick County Community Foundation-The Marvin L. and Joan B. Smith Fund or the USI Presidential Scholarship Fund.
