Vernie was a humble, kind, and joy-filled soul who touched the lives of so many with his warmth, generosity, and unwavering love. He dedicated his life to serving others in many ways: as a master mechanic, a steadfast mentor always guiding others with wisdom and support throughout life’s journey, and most recently as a leader for Hope Central food pantry, where he poured his love and faith into helping those in need.
Always a lover of cars, building and racing anything with an engine was a lifelong passion for Vernie. He proudly completed races such as the infamous Cannonball run from NY to CA, The One Lap of America, and countless drag races throughout the area. Vernie is well known for owning and operating the award-winning Menke’s Automotive Repair for 42 years, retiring in 2016. Menke’s Auto was awarded the Top Shop in the nation twice and won numerous other awards. In his retirement, Vernie enjoyed building and repairing classic cars for fun.
He was a beloved member of New Hope Community Church of Newburgh. For the past eight years, Vernie dedicated nearly every moment he could to Hope Central food pantry, committed to demonstrating God’s love in action by providing assistance to local residents. He found much joy and purpose serving in this way.
