Betty was born in Chicago to Anna and John Boehning on November 11, 1929. She attended both St Dorothy and St. Clotilde grammar schools and Mercy High School in Chicago. She married John Carney on June 3, 1965 at St. Thomas More Church. Betty was an accomplished pianist who studied piano at The Conservatory of Music on Michigan Avenue in Chicago from age 10 through 21, and was a certified piano teacher. She worked at her father’s business, Boehning’s Apothecary alongside her other jobs until his death in November 1963. Betty worked full time at Rock Island Railroad as a keypunch operator until she had children, and was a stay at home mom. When she returned to work, she started in retail, then worked for Stivers Temporary services. She had won many awards while employed at Stivers, and was such a dedicated worker, that multiple companies inquired and hired her full time, including Dean Witter and Morgan Stanley. She had an eclectic taste in music from rock and jazz, blues to classical. She had taken dance lessons when she was young and again in the 1970’s disco era. Betty had wanted to be a Rockette. Her love of music and dancing continued throughout her life.
She was a sweet, loving, funny, caring person that no one whom ever met her had anything but positive things to say about her. Up until the very end, Betty was concerned that her hair, makeup and nails were done. And she always needed a sparkle of jewelry to finish her outfit. Betty always crafting and started painting in her late 80’s.
