Daniel John Rey passed away June 25th in Southern California. Sadly, he lost his valiantly fought battle with addiction. He was born in Chicago on September 13, 1993 to Mary Maloney and Don Rey. He was deeply loved by his girlfriend, Cissy Tubbs and adored and given unconditional love by his Australian Shepherd, Lucé. Mourned by his siblings Christopher (Katie) Carney, Katie (Dan) Nolan, Tony Rey and the late Manny Rey. Loving uncle to Maeve, Rohan and Griffin Nolan; Elin, Harry and Milo Carney; Sidny and Zoey Rey; and Manny Rey. Danny was loved by Dale Bishop, his aunts and uncles: Joe (Cindy) Maloney, Tom (Jeanine) Maloney, Dennis (JoAnn) Maloney, the late Helen Maloney Jacksi, Sandee (the late Steve) Cullinan, the late David (Lisa) DeMauro and Donna (Terry) Smith. Adored by many cousins and other relatives and friends. He is now reunited in heaven with his Nana, Margaret Alonso who loved him so very much, making him his favorite Spanish foods especially chicken and rice, soups and rice pudding. She loved to pamper her Muñeco, powdering him after his bath with Oscar de la Renta (he always liked to smell nice and dress well!)
Dan attended Most Holy Redeemer Grammar School, Southwest Elementary, Palos South Middle School and Carl Sandburg High School (class of 2012). Dan was an excellent athlete, loved playing football at MHR, Palos Stars, St. Alexander’s and four years at Sandburg High School. DRey was really fast and loved returning kickoffs and of course scoring touchdowns. He was a great baseball player, starting early to hit the ball hard, breaking a window at Nana’s house when he was only 3. Many fond memories of watching Dan and his friends play in Evergreen Park and Palos Baseball fields, especially when he would hit a home run at PBO fields for a free pizza. He enjoyed skateboarding, taking his dog for a run every morning (with Lúce) pulling him as he flew behind on his longboard). His favorite places were the dog park and dog beach, other than shopping at Costco for his favorite foods to cook for Cissy.
He lived in St. Augustine, Florida; Hanceville, Alabama and Barcelona, Spain in Comunita Cenacolo, a Catholic recovery community where he deepened his faith and made close friendships and really learned the beauty of a simple life of gratitude, prayer and meaningful labor. Dan lived in southern California for the past two years working in sales and enjoying the beautiful beaches and endless sunshine.
Danny was a handsome, funny, gentle soul who had a contagious laugh and made every room brighter. He will be deeply missed and kept forever alive in our memories. Hug those you love, recognize that life can be lonely, and the smile may hide sadness.
