John was the devoted father of Therese Cleary and Sean (Heidi) Cleary, and the proud, loving Papa of Liam and Kacey, who meant more to him than anything in the world. John is also survived by his cherished siblings: James (Char), Tom (Marge), Chris (Joanna), Anne (Bryan), Patrick, and Brian (Joy), along with many nieces and nephews, countless friends, and anyone who ever shared a laugh or story with him. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Martin and Eileen Cleary.
A proud Veteran of the United States Army and a dedicated member of Local 399 for 48 years, John was as hardworking and loyal as they come. If something was broken, John could fix it-no manual required. He had a gift for all things mechanical and could figure out just about anything… except, as anyone who knew him can confirm, modern technology. John loved people, he loved to talk, but one thing he definitely did not love was having his photo taken. John was famously stubborn, endlessly funny, and truly one of the best storytellers you could ever meet. With a sharp wit and unmatched sense of humor, he had a way of making everyone around him laugh. .
Above all, John was a deeply loyal man-to his family, his friends, and anyone lucky enough to be in his circle. His love for his grandchildren was unmatched, and being their Papa was his greatest joy and proudest role.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois.
John will be deeply missed-but never forgotten. His stories, his laughter, and his spirit will live on in everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
