

John W. Sokachitch passed away on April 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and quiet strength. A proud Army veteran, John served his country with honor before beginning a long and fulfilling career with Conrail, where he worked for 43 years prior to his retirement.
John was the beloved husband of Rita E. Sokachitch (née Ruddy), with whom he shared 54 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering companionship. He was the loving son of the late John and Mary Sokachitch, and the cherished brother of the late Frank Stritch and Joseph (Mary) Sokachitch. He is also remembered fondly by his sisters-in-law, Rosemary Stritch and Nancy McKeon.
A devoted uncle, John leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will carry forward his memory with affection and pride.
John had a lifelong passion for trains, a love that extended beyond his years with the railroad. Throughout his life, he found joy in collecting model trains, especially his treasured Lionel train set.
Known for his humor and warm spirit, John had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to those around him. Even during his illness in later years, he continued to crack jokes, lifting the spirits of family, friends, and caregivers alike.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace, forever remembered as our “Big Guy.”
A morning visitation will take place on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, 7740 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60620. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow promptly at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL.
