Hello,
My name is Regina McNabb, and I am LaVerne’s older and oldest sister. That being the case, I’ve known LaVerne longer than I’ve known my father, my mother, my younger sisters, and my closest friends. I’ve known LaVerne for 77 years. And during our senior years, we spoke to each other at least once a week.
I know you’ve noticed there is no obituary because LaVerne did not want an obituary. She wanted to speak to you directly about who she was. So, I will honor her wishes and not read an obituary and we, the family did not include one in her program.
So, I will instead simply list some of my memories of my sister and I will call these memories LaVerne’s Life Legacies.
1. She taught elementary school students for many years in the Chicago Public School system
2. She had a Master’s Degree in Education
3. She semi-adopted one of her students, Clyde Cooper, and became his other Mom until he died several years ago
4. She worked as a bartender
5. She worked for a non-profit organization “Jobs for Youth” for many years and helped place many young people in productive jobs
6. She was one of the founders of the Chicago chapter of the National Black Feminist Organization back when many women were fighting for equal rights (and we still are)
7. She was the founder of the Conversation, a group who met regularly to discuss topics of the day
8. Last but not least, my sister loved New Faith Baptist Church International. She joined the church well over 45 years ago and inspired me to finally join the church. We attended the Saturday service together for the last few years until the pandemic hit. We spent a week together one summer at Vacation Bible School and one of our proudest achievements together at New Faith was reading and discussing the entire Bible over several years in a special Bible Study class
9. I love, love, love, my sister and I will truly miss her until we meet again
