Charlene Schmidt Hurt, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a ten year battle with Alzheimer's on January 31, 2025 in Oceanside, California. Due to the effects of this debilitating disease, she died not remembering the glorious life she led, nor the many lives she touched - that is left for those of us who remain to do. Always remember. She was not alone.
Born on August 10, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, Charlene dedicated her life to education, advocacy, and the pursuit of knowledge. She determinedly built a distinguished career in the face of adversity, a powerful woman in less progressive times. She began as a reference librarian, and with wit and tenacity progressed to become Dean of Libraries for Washburn University, George Mason University, and Georgia State University. Her leadership and vision shaped these institutions, leaving a lasting impact on students, faculty and friends alike for decades to come.
Beyond her professional achievements, Charlene was known for her unwavering commitment to Equality, Justice and Community. An activist at heart, she approached life with curiosity and an unshakable belief in the power of collective action. She was a devoted mother, a steadfast friend, and a formidable presence-—one who continually inspired those around her with intellect, compassion and her wry sense of humour.
Though she identified as an Atheist, Charlene found deep meaning in her lifelong connection to Unitarianism. She believed that the best of Humanity emerges through unity and shared purpose—-a philosophy that guided her throughout her life. She was a lover of words, a lover of poetry, a lover of knowledge.
Charlene is survived by Lisa Jan Hurt (Daughter), Arlene "Chips" Waggoner (Sister), and Andrew Pol Hurt (Son). She was predeceased by Lester John Schmidt (Father), Loretta Mary (Doyen) Schmidt (Mother), and James Edward Hurt (ex-husband and co-conspirator).
Her memory will live on in the lives she touched and the institutions she strengthened. Those who knew her will always find comfort in the legacy she leaves behind.
