Dorothy (Dodie) Marie Davis Rupert was born May 30, 1926 in Sheffield, a small township, in the Allegheny National Forest in Northwestern Pennsylvania. She was born to the late Ruth and Everett Abramson. She passed away on July 26, 2020, at the age of 94, in Riverside, California.
Dodie was one of three children and the most social. She enjoyed not only time with family but excelled in singing, tap and baton. She honed her social skills and achieved lifetime friendships with her childhood friends.
As a young adult, Dodie took a job as a teller in the local bank. That became a career for a lifetime as she not only established a quick rapport with the general public, but was efficient and accurate. Dodie married Harold (Hal) R. Davis after his return of military service in WWII. The couple had three children. Dodie was an active member of the Junior Women’s Club and the Eastern Star. The family resided in PA until 1964, when they made a move to Southern CA. Despite the distance, Dodie continued a close relationship with her Pennsylvania family and friends. For many years she made annual visits to her hometown in PA to see them and attend high school reunions. The PA family also made trips to CA to create more wonderful memories.
In CA, she and her husband, Hal, reared their children and settled into the CA lifestyle. They continued to be working parents and enjoyed years of camping trips, summer family vacations and many home hosted events with family and friends. Dodie was a positive anchor for her family and all that knew her. Her contagious smile and congenial presence were enviable. Before her retirement, Dodie lost her husband, Hal, of 39 years. However, she remained strong and independent. Her continued strong relationship with family and friends in PA allowed her to become reacquainted with a man she had known from her youth, Bud Rupert. In 1988 the two rekindled their relationship and married. Dodie and Bud had 26 years of happy marriage before his death. The two enjoyed boating, attending celebrity golf tournaments together, traveled to Europe and Hawaii and took numerous cruises. During those years Dodie enjoyed an even greater extended family as Bud had a large family of his own. The two sides of the Rupert family lovingly made frequent visits to each other.
Dodie played an integral part in her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s lives. They fondly remember special outings to the movies and shopping, overnight slumber parties, learning to bake her special cookie recipes, memorable birthdays, holiday gatherings and even out of state trips. They were her joy until the very end.
Dodie believed that her best lifetime accomplishment was that of her family, whom she loved dearly and told them so often. She showered them with hugs and kisses. Her signature expression on birthdays was to make a “singing telephone call.” She kept a close relationship with her adult children and their families despite living in separate counties and states. She will be greatly missed.
