

Recaldo “Rick” Carty, 56, of Carlsbad, CA passed away on July 3, 2024 from metastatic cancer that he valiantly fought for 5 years. Rick was born September 23, 1967 on Curacao to the late Elfreda and Emmanuel Carty. He spent his childhood on St. Maarten and traveled to the US to complete his college degrees.
Rick was a chemist and received his undergraduate degree from Pace University and his graduate degree from The Pennsylvania State University. It was at Penn State that he met and married his wife, Tami. Rick spent most of his working adult life at Ionis Pharmaceuticals in the oligosynthesis group, which he led prior to his death. While at Ionis, he was most proud of doing his part in bringing Spinraza from research to development. He loved science, science fiction, and sports. He was an avid Dodgers, Lakers, Raiders, Notre Dame football, and Penn State fan. Rick enjoyed playing basketball and played pick-up until he physically couldn’t play anymore. Rick was devoted and loving husband and father. He especially enjoyed playing basketball with his boys. He also greatly enjoyed watching them play sports and participate in school activities. Rick will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Tami Marrone, his sons Nicholas and Andrew Carty, his brother Vernon Carty, his brother-in-law Tim Marrone and sister-in-law Vicki Marrone, and his cousin Steven Carty. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephew in the US, Caribbean, and Europe.
