Shoumei Chen Wang, beloved wife, mother, grandmother “Ahma”, sister, aunt, and servant of God passed away peacefully at home in San Diego, CA surrounded by her loved ones on Monday, January 19, 2026 at the age of 76.
Shoumei was born May 16, 1949 in San Xia, Taiwan, a small village outside of Taipei, Taiwan, to the late Zen Zia Chen and Jin Zu Yen. She was the eighth of nine children. Even as a young child, she was studious, disciplined, and smart. When taking her entrance exam for high school, she scored so well she was automatically admitted to the top university in Taiwan. She graduated from Taipei First Girls High School and went on to attend National Taiwan University where she earned a bachelors in accounting.
She moved to the United States in 1971 to join her future husband in Massachusetts. There, she furthered her education and earned a masters degree in Accounting from University of Massachusetts - Amherst. In 1972, she married Jai Ching Wang. They were happily married and served each other for 53 years.
Her first job upon graduation was as an accountant at Smith and Wesson - supporting her husband as he completed his PhD degree in physics. She remained there until she and Jai Ching moved to Huntsville, AL in 1976 for his job as a physics professor. Shoumei began teaching accounting at Alabama A&M University. Although she was well liked by her students, she wanted to find a job that did not require her to be away from her daughter in the evenings. In 1982, she interviewed for a job as a software engineer at Intergraph. Although she had no programming experience, she was hired and began working at Intergraph in December of that year. She concurrently took classes to earn a second masters degree in computer science. She worked there for over 33 years. Although she greatly enjoyed the company of her co-workers and the challenge of the work, she retired early to take care of her sister Grace full time.
Shoumei was a lifelong learner. She always knew she was the smartest one in the family. She diligently studied the Word, listening to sermons and attending multiple in person and online Bible studies. Not only did she continue to grow in her faith, but she also kept up to date on the latest innovations. As a computer programmer, she quickly learned new programming languages, collaborating with much younger co-workers. She effortlessly adapted to messaging people through various apps and attending meetings on Zoom. She managed to pay bills online and taught herself how to use online payment apps. She was always curious about the latest gadgets. She enthusiastically adapted new technologies.
All her life, Shoumei was a loving and generous friend to all those around her. Shortly after moving to Huntsville, she became a Christian, and her faith prompted her to serve others in God’s love. She ministered to countless people, including family, fellow church members, community members, and those who recently immigrated. She tutored family members who moved from Taiwan, she cooked for friends as well as community events, she taught Bible study and Sunday school, she gave people rides and helped them find jobs, she gave items people needed as they set up their new homes in the community. She shared her faith constantly with those around her, desiring that they too would know the love and goodness of God. She diligently studied the Word of God and prayed faithfully for many friends and family.
Shoumei and Jai Ching loved their family and friends in Huntsville, AL where they lived for 45 years. They built a strong community through work, church, and neighbors. In 2021, they made the big move across the country to San Diego, CA to live with their daughter and family. While in San Diego, although limited by health challenges, she continued to serve others, praying and ministering to those around her. She was kind and giving to all she met, and she was grateful to be served and loved by many in her community.
Shoumei is survived by her beloved husband, Jai Ching Wang, her daughter Amy Wu (John), her granddaughters Abigail and Jasmine Wu, and her sisters Yue-Xian Chen, Xing-Hua Chen, and Shou-Ching Chen.
