Funeral services for Lillian H. Barney, age 97 a resident of the UH Maplewood Healthcare and formerly of Hammond will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday July 2, 2016 at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Nichols officiating. Burial will follow at the Ingham Cemetery in Brier Hill.
Calling hours will be held also Saturday from 11:00am until the time of the funeral at the funeral home. Lillian passed away on Thursday (June 30, 2016) at the Healthcare facility.
Surviving is her son Victor (Barbara) Smithers of Ft. Walton Beach FL; step-sons Michael (Marlene) Webster of Edwards NY and Vernon (Marty) Barney of Hammond; a step-daughter Cheryl Roth of Canastota NY; a brother Donald (Dora) Hammond of Rochester; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 1-great-great-granddaughter.
Her husband Robert Barney and three brothers Curtis, Walter & Raymond Hammond predeceased her.
Lillian was born on January 16, 1919 in Rensselaer Falls, a daughter of the late Raymond C. & Verna B. (Perry) Hammond. She graduated from Rensselaer Falls High School and married Donald Smithers on March 20, 1943 which ended with an annulment, and she later married Robert Barney on October 5, 1956.
She received her cosmetology license from Smith’s Hairdressing School in Ogdensburg, and operated her own hair salon in Hammond for 63 ½ years. Lillian was a former member of the Congregational Church in Rensselaer Falls, a member & Deacon of the Hammond Presbyterian Church; a member of the Rensselaer Falls Grange for 27 years, a member of the Rensselaer Falls OES and past matron of the Hammond OES from 1963-1964.
Lillian will be remembered for her kind way with others, and her involvement with various bands playing the drums to include, the Falls Five Rhythmettes, Hammond Kitchen Band, Guys & Dolls, Silhouette’s, Dreamers and the Ogdensburg Community Band. She enjoyed playing the drums, visiting with friends and traveling.
