Carmen Maxine Vaughn passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 6, 2019. She was born on December. 18, 1921 to William and Hope Maxson in Stillwater, OK. In her youth, Carmen was an ace tennis player and was the oldest of three children. After graduating from Central High School in Oklahoma City, she attended secretarial school and earned her certificate with honors.
Carmen had an engaging personality and a sparkle that came from deep within. She was a dynamo who could do all things with efficiency, accuracy, and ingenuity. Carmen married Robert M. Vaughn on December 16, 1941. Just a few short months later, the newlyweds were separated for 38 months while Bob served overseas during World War II in England in the Army Air Corp.
Her first job was at the new Douglas Aircraft Assembly Plant at Midwest Air Depot (Tinker AFB). She was a trailblazer and there were many “firsts” in her work life. She was secretary to the Deputy Superintendent of Putnam City Schools and later was promoted to the school’s first Public Information Officer. She later became Secretary of the Board of the newly created Francis Tuttle Vo-Tech.
Carmen was involved Oklahoma City politics as well as many social and service organizations. Carmen served as the President of Oklahoma Hospitality Club for several years as well as the President of Putnam City Elementary and High School PTA.
Carmen’s whole life was centered and motivated around her family. She adored her husband as well as her children and as her family grew her heart expanded to encompass her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In Carmen’s later years, she lived in Frisco, TX with her daughter Debi, her husband Jay and their children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Katy and brother Gaylyn as well as her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” Vaughn.
Carmen is survived by two sons, daughter and their spouses; Robert M. Vaughn Jr. and Kathleen, Richard W. Vaughn and Teresa, Deborah K. Clark and her husband Jay; grandchildren Shannon McCutchen, Heath Vaughn, Erin Condict, Tyler Vaughn, Megan Bale, Jordan Sparling, Whitney Clark, Hayden Clark; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Carmen was the quintessential wife, mother and friend. She will be profoundly missed as our matriarch and forever lovingly remembered.
