George “Larry “ Wheat was born on 02-26-1947 in Purcell, Oklahoma, and passed on 06-27-24 after an extended stay in the hospital due to continuing health complications. On that day, he joined his parents, Foy and George Wheat, and older sister Nelda Cobb in heaven. Larry graced this world for 77 years and continues his legacy in his remaining family. This includes his loving wife, Debby Wheat, younger brother, David Wheat, and his wife Ginger. Children include daughters, Laura Graham, Kellie Martin, and Traci Sutton and sons, George “Zac” Wheat, and Drew Wheat. Larry was able to see each of his children marry and start a family of their own, giving him 11 grandchildren and 7 grandchildren.
Larry lived a life in rural Oklahoma growing up starting in Purcell and finishing high school at Ft. Cobb. He attended Oklahoma State University before beginning an eclectic life with a variety of careers including farming, owning an oil field service company, and starting in the oil field as a roughneck and moving up the ranks to become a drilling superintendent for the last 15 years before his retirement. His job took him to a multitude of places all over the United States, giving him amazing stories to share about his travels. While he took his responsibilities to his job seriously his main driving force to work with such passion was his kids and grandkids.
Many people would and can likely describe Larry in many ways, but if you were to ask most people would say he is remembered for his determination, his “large and in charge” attitude, and the ability to stand firm in his beliefs. He was famous for his blunt nuggets of wisdom such as “If you are not going to use your head, you might as well have two a**holes”, leaving the receiver of wisdom shocked and laughing but never forgetting the words or whom they had come from. While bold and iron-willed, he was also a kind and compassionate man who put the needs of his family above all else. This could very well be the reason he held on as long as he did, becoming a medical marvel for the last 10 years.
While his body is no longer with us, his spirit will live on through the people with whom he shared and passed down his best qualities. He was and will continue to be loved and remembered by all who knew him.
