M. Curtis Thompson

He went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2022. Curt graduated from Moore High School in 1950, lettering in football (captain), basketball, and baseball. He was class president and participated in 4H and theater. After serving in the Coast Guard for four years, he attended Central State University where he played football and ran track. He graduated in 1957 with a degree in Physical Education and later a master’s degree. In 1956, Curt married the love of his life, Vera Jean Cox, and they raised two children, Todd and Teri.

Curt had a lifelong career with the YMCA of Oklahoma City, serving as the Capitol Hill Youth Director, Central Branch Physical Director, and 28 years as the Executive Director of the Northside YMCA. He was responsible for many fundraising and activity milestones at Northside. For 56 years, Curt was an active member of Village Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and youth Sunday School teacher. He was an active member of Kiwanis for 31 years, and also supported many other clubs and sporting activities.

Curt loved Vera and his family with his whole heart, he was selfless, giving, and had a kind spirit. ‘Grandad’ was very special, always encouraging and participating in all of Tyler, Corby, and Lexie’s activities. Curt shared many travel and retirement days with dear friends from his church, golf, bridge and YMCA family.

He was preceded in death by Vera in 2014, and his daughter Teri Lyn in 1977. He is survived by his son Todd Curtis and wife Karrie, grandchildren: Tyler Curtis Thompson (Gabrielle Henson), Todd Corbin Thompson, and Alexa Laine O’Neal (Robert O’Neal). He was also preceded in death by his sister Lahoma Fowler and brother Kenneth Thompson. He will be missed by his sisters, Jean Miller and Beverly Middaugh (Jim), and many friends and family.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Family will receive guests following the graveside at Memorial Park’s Historic Cemetery Chapel located at the entrance of the cemetery.
