Jerome was the second of five children born to Jerry and Mary Ann (Tremayne) Mook. Jerome was a 1978 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. In December of 1979, Jerome married Candace LaPlant. They went on to have two sons, Jerome Mook III and Jesse Mook. Throughout his life, Jerome loved working on cars. Rebuilding classic cars was his specialty. He owned and operated One Stop Auto Shop and later, Jerome’s Restoration and Fabrication. He was a talented pool player and spent many evenings enjoying the company of friends around the pool table. Jerome was a talented artist in many arenas.
In August of 2001, at the age of 41, Jerome was struck by a car while walking across the street. He suffered a traumatic brain injury. Miraculously, he survived. Sadly, he never truly recovered. His ability to create new memories was greatly affected. He did not know the men that his sons became. He did not recognize his daughters-in-law. He never knew the great pride that comes with having ten beautiful grandchildren. Even so, he loved to hear about his family. “Jerome, did you know you’re a grandpa?” His face would light up with delighted surprise, “Really?! I am?” He loved to see pictures and hear stories, even though he could not remember them when they were over. He believed that he’d won the lottery and loved to tell us all the things he would buy us. He longed to share his life and love with us to the best of his ability. Jerome was not a religious man before his accident. His heart was softened to the Lord after his injury. He spoke of God’s love and forgiveness. Maybe he couldn’t fully understand or speak what was in his heart, but we believe that he knew the love of Christ in his final years. Jerome said over and over, “Love God, hate the devil.” We are grateful that Jerome had time to come to love the Lord. His final years were very hard. His health and memory continued to decline. As we all aged, Jerome struggled to recognize his own sons. Our loss has been long and painful. We are relieved that his suffering is finally over.
Jerome leaves behind a loving family including his parents, Jerry and Mary Ann and his four siblings: Michelle (Amy) Mook, Elizabeth (Pete) Zishka, Jon Mook, and Andrea (Joel) Zimmerman. Jerome also leaves behind two sons. Jerome Mook III is married to Kara (Myers). They have two little girls, Emmelynn and Kyliann. Jesse Mook is married to Amanda (Thomas). They have seven children, Hannah, Katie, Elijah, John Paul, Daniel, Thomas, and Lucy with another little one due to be born in June. Jerome also leaves behind nieces and nephews: Connor, Colby, Jasmine, Brody, Devyn, Kaenen and great niece, Zyniyah.
