Mel was born September 4, 1927, in Pocahontas, Missouri, son of Paul and Rosa Haertling. He married Mary Lou Macke on January 22, 1950.
Melbert is survived by his son, John Haertling (Sharon); daughters, Susan McClain and Sally Sullivan (Bob); brothers, Nelson and Leroy Haertling; five grandchildren, Brooke, Heather, John (JP), Justin, and Nicole and his eleven great grand-children, Billie, Joey, Luke, Piper, Ella, Mason, Declan, Brooklyn, Wyatt, Ruby and Maizy.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Haertling; his parents, Paul and Rosa Haertling; his sister, Mildred Miller; and granddaughter, Kindra Hawk.
Melbert, an Army Veteran, proudly served his country during World War II (January 1946 through May 1947) and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. He was thrilled to attend the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C, on October 4, 2011.
Mel and Mary moved from Pocahontas, MO to Cape Girardeau, MO in 1958. He worked a short time for Strubinger Law Firm before beginning his lifetime career with State Farm Insurance. Mel took early retirement from State Farm on August 30, 1990 after 30 years of employment.
There was always time to go fishing. From childhood on, Mel went fishing with family and friends. He took his children fishing at an early age and later even introduced some of his grandchildren to his favorite pastime. He continued his love for the sport through his 80’s.
Mel was a recreational golfer; more for the social aspect than anything. He marshalled at Deer Creek Golf Course for several years more passionate for the social interaction it provided than engagement in the sport itself.
Mel never new a stranger. He was affable and exceedingly approachable toward everyone - young and old. “MR” could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved conversing with folks and learning about their past, career, and hobbies. He was always available to lend an ear.
Most importantly, Mel loved to laugh and enjoy life. The memory of his easy manner will be treasured by all family, friends, and strangers who were fortunate to have engaged him.
A visitation for Melbert will begin at 9:30 AM, followed by his funeral service at 11am on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66207.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Melbert's memory may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas.
