Nadine L. Swanson, 91, Overland Park, Kansas died peacefully on January 18, 2020 at the Heritage of Overland Park. A Rosary from 9:30am - 10:00am followed by visitation and Memorial Mass at 11:00am will be held on Tuesday, January 28th at the Church of Holy Cross in Overland Park. Following a luncheon, burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Raytown, Missouri.
Nadine was born on March 24, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, the youngest of 5 children to Ernest and Kathryn Magness. Upon graduation from High School, she began a short career at the Gas Service Company where she met the love of her life, Bill Swanson. They were married on July 5, 1952 and were blessed with 67 years of marriage. When their family began to grow, Nadine retired to stay home and raise the children. They lived most of their life in the Kansas City area aside from 8 years in El Dorado, Kansas.
Nadine was energetic and fun and loved to meet people. Her Catholic faith was very important to her. She attended daily mass, made an Adoration Hour every week, and was always ready to help out at her parish. She joined the group of about 10 people from Holy Cross who faithfully took food down to serve the poor in Kansas City, KS every month. When the coordinator of the group died, Nadine and Bill were asked to step in. They generously served in that position for over 28 years.
Nadine and Bill loved to travel. Family vacations were a must when their children were young but also continued as they grew and had families of their own. Some of their grandchildren’s favorite memories are of weeks at Table Rock Lake with their parents and grandparents. Rarely a year went by that they didn’t travel somewhere. Whether by car, train or plane, they saw most of the United States, spent some time in Canada and Mexico, cruised the Caribbean and vacationed in Russia, Ireland and England.
Another love of Nadine’s was dancing. She joined an over-50 group that took dance lessons twice a week. Country line dancing was her specialty and even when she needed a walker to keep her balance, if the right song was playing, she would be walking with a bounce in her step keeping time with the beat.
Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and second daughter, Diane Dickson. In fact, by God’s perfect timing, she joined Diane in heaven on Diane’s birthday, Jan. 18. She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Patti (Bill) Geckles, Bill (Vicky) Swanson, Karen (Dave) Gregory, David (Katy) Swanson, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was a perfect wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation to Holy Cross Catholic School, 8101 W. 95th Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66212.
