

Naomi Mae Butler, 92, of Overland Park, KS, was taken home to Heaven to be with her previously deceased loved ones on April 27 at 4:00 p.m. She passed away in North Kansas City Hospital after suffering from complications of a fractured hip. She will be remembered by family and friends as a kind, loving, generous and compassionate person who dedicated her life to her family.
Born in Iconium, Missouri in 1919 to Waldo & Lula Mae Bernard, she would have been 93 years young on May 11th. Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ben A. Butler, and a brother, Eugene. Naomi and Ben were married on September 17, 1938 and celebrated 49 years of marriage. They had 3 children, Dennis, Bonnie and Gary. Upon graduating from business college, Naomi worked for a law firm, Hallmark Cards, JC Penney’s, and then spent the majority of her career with Shawnee Mission School District as secretary for the Director of Personnel. She loved writing, gardening, playing dominos, eating chocolate, listening to music and participating in family activities. She was also very spiritual and enjoyed creating many quilts and scrapbooks. Naomi and Ben won numerous dance contests in their youth and enjoyed being involved with their children’s activities. Upon retirement Naomi volunteered at Shawnee Mission Hospital for a number of years. Naomi loved the home she and Ben built together, and she lived there on her own until the last few months of her life.
Survivors are her sons, Dr. Dennis Butler and wife Revé of Overland Park, Gary Butler and wife Connie of Lenexa, and a daughter, Bonnie Wiltrout and husband Jim of Weatherby Lake; 6 grandchildren: Diana Butler of KC, Britney and Brett Butler of Lenexa, Chris and Clint Rapp of Texas, and Christy Butler (deceased); 4 great grandchildren; brothers John Bernard of Mission, KS, and Dewey Bernard of Indianapolis, and sister Lillian of Adamstown, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews and relatives on her husband’s side.
Visitation is on Wednesday, May 2 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at McGilley and Hoge Funeral Home, 8024 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and the funeral service will be there also on Thursday, May 3 at 10:00 a.m. Family suggests donations to the Salvation Army in lieu of flowers.
