Steven J. Schuller

Steven J. Schuller, of Overland Park, KS died on August 20, 2019. Celebration of Life will be Saturday, October 19th, 2019 from 3-5 pm at the Villa Medici Club House, 9550 Ash Street, Overland Park, KS. Steve served as a pharmacy technician while stationed at Ft. Gordon, GA with Dan Crook, RPH. After leaving the Army, Steve came to KU as a pharmacy school student largely because of his friendship with Dan. He worked in the pharmacy department with Ken Harms as a student and also worked with Dr. Val Stella. During this time, he assisted with the development of fosphenytoin. He was present for the first test for the conversion of fosphenytoin to phenytoin in actual human blood.

After graduating in 1978, Steve joined the Pharmacy Department at KUMC. While there, he became one of the first Clinical Pharmacists rounding with the Rehab. service. He had significant success getting involved in several areas of patient management which included anticonvulsant management, spasticity management for head trauma and spinal trauma patients, neurogenic bladder management and others. He created a very solid clinical pharmacy role in Rehab. Steve moved into a Supervisor role for several years. During this time, he was involved with the planning and rollout of IV PCA for the hospital. He actually was the first patient to use the IV PCA as an orthopedic patient at KUMC. Steve became a full-time evening supervisor central pharmacy until he retired. He helped train Pharmacy students and new hires. He was a masterful vacation planner for hiking trips and he also helped fellow employees plan their trips. He loved planning and this was before the internet. He retired from being a full-time employee in 2007 to working part-time for a few more years.

Steve was a big time Jayhawks basketball fan and for a number years had season tickets for home games. The Kansas Royals were also a favorite. Steve enjoyed planning hiking trips to national parks,

rollerblading, bike riding and working in the yard of his house as his health allowed. Special thanks to Susan Klenke, Dave Henry, Ken Harms and Dr. Val Stella for contributing information.

Steve is survived by his sisters, Lois Ward and Irene Malloy; brother, John Schuller; nieces, Stephanie Malloy and Erin Malloy; nephews, Michael Schuller, Thomas Schuller and Daniel Malloy; and great nephew, Ryan Malloy.
