Before the war, the family moved to Leningrad. His father lived in hiding because they used to own a small candle shop. Eliazar and his brother were bringing him food every day.
During WWII Eliazar was in Blockade of Leningrad. He stayed in the surrounded city for two years. It was horrific time. He only spoke about it once. He and his brother were evacuated from the city to Asia. Despite the war, Eliazar managed to attend and graduate from Leningrad Polytechnik Institute. He became an engineer.
He worked at plant Ekonomaizer for 40 years. He and his team designed turbines and pumps for power plants. He became leader in charge of design department. He earned respect of his team, his peers and the management. He was selected to represent the plant in negotiations with government and military customers. He was loved and respected by his co-workers. Many of them stay connected with him decades he retired and left the country.
He was a devoted auto enthusiast, one of the pioneer car owners in his city. His family remembers Eliazar's stories about road trips. His first car was 23hp, and he took it hundreds of miles across USSR. Later the car changed, and many people remember his famous orange Moskvich.
Eliazar married Liya Volchek in 1967. The same year his son Alex was born. Eliazar took good care of his family. They moved to a small apartment where they lived with his mother-in-law. They were surrounded with friends; they took good care of each other. They never shouted at each other.
Eliazar was an inventor. He figured out how to connect extra phone in each room, built storage under the ceiling. They used to take son to a village with his wife's sister. One year, Eliazar dug up gravel road between the houses and established a phone line.
In the 90s he retired and moved to California. At the same time his wife developed Alzheimers. Eliazar stood by her side and took care of her for many years. They spent countless hours walking along the trails, Eliazar was holding her hand and protecting her. Their favorite route was the trail along Del Monte Avenue.
Once Liya moved to nursing home, Eliazar visited her two or three times every day. He wanted to make sure she is eating alright and felt comfortable. That continued until she passed away in 2002.
Despite the age, Eliazar conducted active and energetic life style. He drove car, met friends, and maintained an independent life. He developed a passion for making videos. Every time he would travel out of town, he would make a video showing his trips and narrating history about the places he visited. He mastered the use of his computer to overlay text, music and original sound in videos, he researched and wrote the scripts, and produced final DVDs.
Once he met Alla, they developed love and care for each other. They helped each other, traveled, and spent time together. One day, Eliazar's neighbor moved out and Alla was able to move to the townhouse next to him. They really cared for each other. They wanted to make sure that the other person is alright. Every day, they would call each other and synchronize the breakfast. They exchanged dishes over the balcony railing. They cooked, shopped and walked together every day.
His granddaughter Lillian was born in 2016, two days after Eliazar had stroke. He was waiting for the granddaughter for many years. Seeing her and Alla helped Eliazar to find energy to fully recover. He possessed unstoppable energy to get better. He worked very hard every day to become independent. At one time he was recovering from pneumonia in nursing home. Because there was a test to pass before he can go home, he was walking over 100 loops inside the building daily. Finally, he was able to go home and live an independent life.
Grandfather Eliazar adored his baby and became her true friend. They spent weekends together, he was reading her books, and played with her. Despite health issues, Eliazar had the drive to be active and live a fulfilling life.
We will remember him as a kind, intelligent, energetic and caring person; a person who did not want to trouble others and loved people around him.
