Joseph Francis Golden was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1920. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 with an Honors Degree in English, served in Occupied Guadalcanal, and met his wife of 60 years, Janet, at the University of Michigan where he earned a Master’s Degree. They moved to California where he taught at St. Mary’s College, then co-founded the Junipero Serra Catholic book and art store in San Francisco, organized lectures and colloquia throughout the Bay Area, and hosted a book discussion program on KGO. In 1969, he moved the shop to Monterey, and then began teaching adult education courses throughout the Monterey Peninsula. Joe and Janet moved to Canterbury Woods in Pacific Grove in 1989. Thanks to all his friends for their love and support, and special gratitude to the staff at Canterbury Woods who loved and cared for him for so many years. Everybody who met Joe was touched by his kindness and courtesy. He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Kate Golden (John Fields) and Ann Golden; his granddaughters, Emily, Claire and Eve, and his great-granddaughters, Nicoletta, Zoe and Nora. They were the joy of his life. As many said of him, Joseph Golden was a gentleman and a gentle man. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove tomorrow, Thursday, September 14 at 10 :30 followed by a private family ceremony at San Carlos Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, CA.
