Montaz Y. Gabriel
Montaz Y. Gabriel, 72, passed away on July 10, 2021, in Pacific Grove, California. Montaz was born in Iraq on May 31, 1949.
He is survived by his loving children—Monette Hagopian and her husband, Paul; Christine Gabriel; Paul Gabriel and his wife, Vivien—and his three grandchildren—Chloe, Sophie and Narsai. He is also survived by his siblings—Sheba, Nashat, Kais, Nashida and Shoqat Gabrail—and his devoted partner, Mirna Massara. He was predeceased by his wife, Claudette Gabriel.
Montaz and his wife emigrated from Iraq in 1977, where they eventually built their life in Pacific Grove. He retired in 2012 from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey as the dean of the Middle East School II. As an avid golfer, Montaz’s love for the game was infectious and led to deep friendships that he greatly cherished.
Funeral services will be performed at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey on July 15, 2021, at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his loving memory to the Assyrian Aid Society (assyrianaid.org).
