Carmel ~ Patricia Doyle Lockhart died unexpectedly and peacefully in her home at Hacienda Carmel on August 17, 2014. “Pat” or “Patsy,” as she was known by family and friends, was born in March 1920 in Yokohama, Japan while her father represented General Electric International before he returned to GE in Schenectady, New York where Pat was raised.
Pat took an early interest in art and moved to New York City after high school to pursue her passion at New York School of Applied Art and then The Cavanaugh School where she studied fine art. Over the years her painting style evolved from realism to impressionism and abstract, before switching to ceramics. Following a hiatus to raise her family, Pat became actively involved in the Palo Alto Art Club. There she was a volunteer gallery director, featured artist, exhibiter in many juried art shows, and winner of a number of awards in the San Francisco Peninsula area. Not content to be a stay-at-home mother, when her children were school-age, Pat obtained her Real Estate license and took great pride in selling only houses she knew her clients would enjoy for many years. Some of her clients continued to keep in touch with her.
While living in NYC, Pat met U.S. Naval officer James D. Lockhart. They married in June 1943 making their home in Poughkeepsie, New York. After twelve more years of cold winters, Pat suggested that Jim find a job “where there were palm trees.” The move to California suited the family and Jim spent the remainder of his career in the aeronautical/space industry as a lead engineer.
After retiring, Pat & Jim moved to Carmel Valley and later built their dream home in Carmel Meadows. Both were active members of the Oriental Art Society and Pat also joined the Monterey Museum of Art, where she was a docent at La Mirada for many years. After Jim’s death in 2005, Pat moved to Hacienda Carmel. She regularly attended mass at the Carmel Mission until she recently began to slow down, but continued to support the Mission’s restoration efforts. Hacienda Carmel’s Art Committee honored Pat last year by featuring a solo retrospective of her paintings, which showed her tremendous and diverse artistic talent.
Pat is survived by her three children: Susan Busby of San Francisco, Peter Lockhart of Palo Alto, and Denise Lockhart of Santa Barbara; as well as four grandchildren. Pat was as proud of her country as she was of her art, and her indomitable spirit, determination, generosity and thoughtfulness will be missed by her friends and loved ones. Peter and Denise wish to thank their mother’s friends and the kind, patient and helpful staff at Hacienda Carmel with whom Pat frequently interacted.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
