Hi Daddy,  Today it has been one year since you left this earth and those that love you.  We are doing better than I imagined, mostly because we are in denial.  There are times when I come across the smallest things that remind me of you and the fact that you are gone.  That makes it hard.  Like your handwriting, or a picture or a piece of clothing you wore.  I love you.

Happy birthday.  I so miss you and love you.  Mom is doing pretty good, Lily is now 7 months old and reminds me of you.  I cannot believe you have been gone 10 months.  It still hurts...not seeing you, not hearing your voice.  We all love you and  miss you.

Uncle Pete was larger than life, before I even knew what larger than life meant. He had a presence and captivating personality that always, without even trying, made him the center of attention, whether it be while conversing with two people or a room full of people playing cards.

I remember how we idolized him, me and my cousins. We were around 13 years old lifting weights, more like fooling around, in my cousin Rodney's garage. Skipper, my other cousin, Rodney and I wanted those thick sinewy forearm veins and a rock-hard body, like our Uncle Pete had. 

He was always kind and thoughtful  I remember him trying to draw the shyness out of me when I was young.

One day while visiting in Monterey, shopping with my wife, Beth, our young daughter Jennah, and my mother,  his youngest living sister  in Costco, I heard that familiar voice. Josephineah! Josephineah! he said, calling my mother's name, as only he could. I hadn't seen him for a while  decades actually  because I was living and working in Chico. 

It was so good to see him and his wife, my Aunt Josephine. He was older, almost 90, but still walking on his own, looking fit and healthy, wearing his World War II veteran's baseball cap like what it was: a badge of honor. I felt so proud to be in his presence  one of the few World War II heroes still alive. He had lost the dark complexion he had when he was younger and fishing and constantly working outside, and time had taken away that hard-as-steel body. But his quick wit, unmistakable voice, penchant for telling jokes, and eyes so filled with joy and life were still there.

I introduced him to my family and later on asked him how he was able to join the Navy at 17. After bugging his father non-stop and finally convincing him to sign the enlistment papers, he told him,  Don't worry Pop, with me and my brother Joe fighting, the enemy doesn't stand a chance. 

When we were young, working out in my cousin's garage, we had no idea what a great man he was. He was just our Uncle Pete  someone who told funny jokes, was engaging and funny, that we would go fishing with on family camping trips at Big Sur, see at family get-togethers barbecuing salmon, and later on playing poker with the adults as well as the older nieces and nephews, always laughing, always joking around.

He was, and always will be, my Uncle Pete.

Hi Daddy,
Congratulations!  You are a new Great Grandpa.  Lily Josephine was born yesterday at 11:58 pm.  She weighs 7lbs and is very healthy.  Thank you for caring for her until she could join us here.

My sister and I were just talking about Pete and how much we adored him. He was a family friend for as long as I can remember. I wanted to get in touch with him to ask him some questions about my Dad and looked online to see if I could find his number and saw his obituary instead. I'm so very sorry for his families loss. He was such a dear sweet man. I will always remember his laugh and him buying me a coffee and hot cinnamon roll at Red's in honor of my Mom and Dad shortly after my Mom passed away. RIP "Uncle" Pete! :'(

He was a Great Friend. I liked Seeing him at all ICF events and around Town. Always with a Smile.He would make an Effort to Come to You when You See him and say "Hi".

You may have known him as the man telling jokes and serving you coffee & doughnuts behind the counter at Red's Doughnuts in Seaside, or the golfing buddy in Pacific Grove, or the volunteer at the ICF dinners.  He was always quick to lend you a hand, offer advice or fix what was broken.  He was so much more than that.  Peter was a World War II veteran serving in the Pacific aboard the USS North Carolina.  He was a commercial fisherman for many years traveling the California coast aboard the Star of Monterey and also spent many summers in Alaska fishing for salmon.  He was a very avid fresh water fisherman.  We spent many summers in Big Sur camping & trout fishing where he taught me to "be patient" and appreciate the outdoors. He was a member of the Carpenters Local # and recently had received his 50 year member card.  He was a member of the American Legion #.

Peter was a loving husband to my mother, Josephine, for 65 years. They shared a passion for dancing and spent many Saturday nights at the Moose Lodge kicking up their heels.   They provided a loving, home to their son, Peter Jr.,(deceased) and daughter, Vita.

He may have been your Uncle Pete, your brother or cousin or your Grand Pa or your father in law.  He may have been a good friend and you were glad you knew him.

More than anything he was my Father.  Always there, always strong, always the protector.

I love you Daddy and I miss you.
