Born on 2 December 1939 in Salinas, California. Affectionately known as Bob, Robert was a caring, kind-hearted father, grandfather, and friend. He spent his career as a general contractor, who used his skills in fine woodworking to remodel and build numerous homes over five decades. His woodworking was exemplified in custom cabinets, stairways, and finish details. His clients and friends admired Bob’s dedication to detail.
Bob had many lifelong interests he was passionate about, including outdoor sports like scuba diving and skiing, adventure travel, and nature photography. He extensively traveled the world in his youth after an honorary discharge from the Army in Germany, traveling throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and India as well as throughout his life and retirement, visiting every continent on Earth. He loved sharing the nature photographs he took on his travels with his friends and family.
During his early travels, he met Jenny in London. They continued their friendship after Jenny moved to New York and he drove across the country and moved Jenny from New York City to the small town of Willow Creek, California. They finally established a home in Monterey and raised a family. Bob cherished his family, living in Monterey and was a lifelong member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium with membership since its inception.
He is survived by his daughter Paris Vogelpohl, son Roman Nelson, and three grandchildren, Baylie Vogelpohl, Blake Vogelpohl, and Charlie Nelson, whom he adored. He is also survived by Jenny Nelson, his sister Linda Boucher, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob’s life will be celebrated on 25 January 2025 at the Elks Club #1285, 150 Mar Vista Drive, Monterey from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. In place of flowers, the family requests donations to the SPCA, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Monterey Bay Aquarium, or Nature Conservancy Fund.
