Robert George Profeta (Bob) was born in New York City on April 6, 1934. He graduated from City College of New York and worked for AT&T doing transcontinental communication systems in the early days. What most people do not know is that Bob started off his professional life as an electrical engineer on nuclear power plants.
The man who hired Bob to work for General Electric back in 1966 had a secretary named Judie. They married and after some training, GE sent them to India with son Greg, where he would work on an installation near Mumbai (then Bombay). “My job basically was to make sure that the instrumentation in the core to monitor the reaction was properly installed, and also I installed the equipment that moved the rods in and out of the core.” There was nothing basic about that.
They were in India for three years, where son Rob was born – and then they were sent to Basque country near Bilbao to start up a plant there. Daughter Aimee nearly made being born in Spain, but they were sent back to The States to Saratoga, California, where she was born. Shortly Bob was transferred to upstate New York to a place called Oswego and another startup facility. Four years later they were sent to Taiwan for a similar stint. Finally, it was back to The States where they settled in Morgan Hill for 20 years where he continued to train GE engineers.
After a few years, Bob got a little itchy, and with two other trainers struck out on their own, setting up a small consulting business. They even built their own simulators “so the operators could get some actual hands-on feel of the particular system.”
Bob always made an impression on all those who knew him. He was incredibly smart and loved his field of expertise, which was very specialized. He was called upon for many years to travel all over the country to train new engineers to follow in his footsteps.
In the late 80s, the Profetas still lived in Morgan Hill where Judie had a real estate practice. Bob had his own real estate license and would help her out on weekends. But Judie always wanted to move to Carmel, so they did. They owned their own real estate firm in Carmel which they ran for over 20 years together, licensed under a Bay Area firm. That company eventually sold out to a large national firm that didn’t fit for Bob and Judie’s vision, so they happily merged with the local Carmel Realty Company.
Judie’s focus has been on real estate, but while Bob kept his hand in, he continued to go around the country to conduct two-week training sessions “to train new technicians and refresh systems engineers.” He happily maintained that work ethic until just a few years ago.
Bob loved traveling all over the world many times over with his family. He spent his most favorite times with family and friends and loved going to the theater, dining out and reading. As quiet as he was, he had a dry wit and great sense of humor. He loved winning most every chess and checker game he could with anyone who dared to challenge him!
Bob was a gentle, loving and caring husband, father and friend who will be wholly missed. He is survived by his wife Judie, of 55 years; sons Gregory Profeta and Robert Profeta and his daughter Aimee LoNardo; and 9 grandchildren………….He passed away peacefully on August 1, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.
