On the early rainy morning of Monday, January 9, 2023, Roy Joseph Browning, beloved husband of Paula, passed after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Roy is also survived by three beautiful daughters, Elissa, Constance and Anna, as well as nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and other extended family.
Roy was born and raised in Los Angeles, son of Roy and Julia Browning, and brother to five siblings. He was 83 at the time of his transition. Browning is the family surname, which stems from their great-grandfather who migrated from England to Mexico in 1885, where the linage soon turned to be primarily Mexican. Roy enjoyed that heritage and culture. He spoke beautiful Spanish and was often called “Royito.”
Roy served in the Marine Corps after high school, and was a restauranteur, a police officer and firefighter for the Fresno/Yosemite International Airport and, lastly, as manager of Monarch Pines (senior mobile home park) in Pacific Grove, California where he engaged with neighbors and workers alike with friendship and respect. It was there, in nearby Monterey, that he met and married Paula in 2005. He retired in 2011. At the time of his passing, he was a resident of Monarch Pines, a place he loved and helped to build into the amazing senior community it is today.
Roy was known for his strong family bonds and an adventurous spirit. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling to several countries with Paula. He participated in 5 Bass Derby fishing events in Rio Vista, CA where he and Paula have a second home. He was a great sports fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Rams football team and the San Francisco Warriors. Roy was a gourmet cook and award-winning cocktail mixologist. He liked teasing his family members and had a good sense of humor. Roy will be remembered with great fondness by his family and many others. He lives on in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held for Roy at Monarch Pines Clubhouse on Sunday, February 19th at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Power Over Parkinson’s, 7201 Glen Forest Dr., Suite 205, Richmond, VA , 23226
