

CARMEL ~ Retired Navy Captain Sidney Brooks, age 95, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of Ohio State University, he entered the U.S. Navy from that state in 1940. Sid served in the Pacific aboard cruisers during WWII. In post-war years, he commanded various ships at sea and served as Deputy Commander of the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range, Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico; and Commander of the Naval Weapons Services Office, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1967.
After his Navy career, Sid was Executive Director of the Council of Monterey Bay and was the first Manager of the Monterey Regional Wastewater Pollution Control Agency. In addition, he was a past president of the boards of directors for the Monterey Peninsula Suicide Prevention Center, the Alliance on Aging, and the Boys Club of the Monterey Peninsula. Sid was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the Bishop Museum, and the Nature Conservancy in Honolulu, Hawaii. He also served as a volunteer with the Community Hospital Auxiliary and at the Monterey City Library.
Sid married the late Jean Chastain in 1943 and they had four children together. He married Lisa Holmes in 1973. Sid is survived by his wife, Lisa; sons, Richard of Gilroy, Robert of Seattle and Bruce of Olympia, WA; his daughter, Jamie Sue of Carmel and three grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held. Following cremation, his ashes will be scattered at sea. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the SPCA of Monterey County, PO Box 3058, Monterey, 93942.
