Larry grew up in Troy and was the first in his family to attend college, an achievement that shaped the course of his life. He built a distinguished career as a Certified Public Accountant, becoming a longtime partner at the prominent firm Dembo, Daffner, Friedman & Shutt in Schenectady, NY. He took great pride in building his career from the ground up and doing things his own way, guided by independence, confidence, and determination.
In 1960, Larry married Judith, and together they raised their two children. Outgoing by nature, Larry made friends wherever he went. He had an easy charm and a generosity of spirit that made him memorable to those who crossed his path. He believed strongly in living for today — because you never know what tomorrow will bring, a sentiment he often shared with others.
He was active for many years at Beth Israel Synagogue in Schenectady, forming meaningful friendships and contributing to the life of the community.
Family was important to Larry, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He valued their visits, their milestones, and the joy they brought into his life.
Larry is survived by his spouse, Judith Dembo; his daughter Janice (Richard) Calhoun; and his son Mark (Jennifer) Dembo. He was a grandfather to Malorie, Elyssa, Seth, Alexis, and Julien, and a great-grandfather to Adalynn, Penelope, and Phoebe.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Phyllis Sachs and Idester Miller.
Larry’s later years were difficult as his health declined and he struggled with the loss of the independence he valued so deeply.
A funeral service will be held at IJ Morris at Star of David of the Palm Beaches, 9321 Memorial Park Road, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33412, on November 19, 2025, at 2:30 PM.
Shiva will take place following the service and on Thursday November 20 from 3-7pm at the Calhoun's residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association: https://donorservices.alz.org/page
Larry will be remembered with gratitude for his humor, his spirit, and the many connections he made throughout his life.
