Born in New York City, New York, Michael grew up in Philadelphia where he began his education at Villanova University, where he received his B.S. in Chemistry. Dedicated to a career in the field of science, Michael went on to receive his PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh and continued his education journey at Columbia University where he graduated with a post-doctorate degree in Bioorganic Chemistry.
Michael began his career at Allied Chemical, where, as an organic chemist, his research in the lab was responsible for obtaining numerous important patents. His success in the lab brought Michael an impressive offer from Eni Chem, a major Italian chemical company that wanted to open their first American operation. Michael helped to establish the organic chemistry division of Eni Chem in New Jersey, which also resulted in his spending a lot of time in Milan, where the company’s headquarters was based.
Deciding to leave the lab environment, Michael spent the next 22 years in Human Resources at the world-renowned Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, where he provided staffing support and hiring for US Medical and IT.
A son dedicated to his late mother, Miriam Levin, Michael would fly thousands of miles each year from the East coast to visit her in Los Angeles. Adored by his three sisters, Michael was always there for them and was their confidant and best friend. Beloved by his nieces and nephews, Michael never missed their birthday celebrations and milestone events.
Michael was kind, honorable and brilliant. A gentle gentleman, he was humble and a loyal friend.
His hobbies were varied from owning horses to playing tennis and golf. Michael often flew around the country to attend many major golf tournaments and treasured having annual tickets to attend the US Open Tennis Tournament.
Michael was predeceased by his sister, Gwenn Marks. He is survived by his sisters, Helaine Ross-Pearlstein and Lisa Abel (Michael); his nephews Andrew Abrahams (Maura), and Joey Abel; his niece Dr. Samantha Abel (Dr. Clark Murray); his great-nephews, Max and Zach; and his great-niece, Nina Abrahams.
