Judy and Family,

I just found out about Gene's passing. 
Though I live in Baytown, I do not take the Baytown Sun.

I ran track and played football at Horace Mann Jr. High. with Gene. We were Co-Captains of the football team our 9th grade year. It was an honor to be Co-anything with Gene. And in track, I was on two relays with him. In one in particular, the Sprint Medley Relay, I ran the first leg, a 220 yard sprint, that was followed by two 110 yard sprints (by two relay members I no longer remember) and then the baton was handed off to Gene, our achor. We were always behind when he got the baton. But when Gene had a quarter mile (his part of the relay, 440 yards) those ahead of him were destined to eat his dust and watch him sprint over the finish line ahead of them. I have two gold track medals thanks to Gene and his drive to win -- and his remarkable speed. I remember he was voted Best Athelete at Horace Mann our 9th grade year. I feel he would've been voted the "bestest and mostest" of everything if it would've been allowed.

There was one other incident that Gene played a little roll in my life in Jr. High. I had had a date with Johnny May's Ex. And Gene warned me May was looking for me. After a couple of days, Gene passed on to me that May had a change of heart (I like to think Gene talked him out of it), to my relief, as I knew I was no match for him in a fist fight.

Gene was a natural athelete. He always had my admiration.

Judy, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know your pain. The pain is devasting. I just lost my wife of 43 years May 02, 2011.

Dear Judy and Families,
     Growing up, Gene was my closest and best friend. Whether we were playing football in Winno's backyard with Charles Beaman and Eddie Gray, or cruising Texas Avenue in Everett Nix's Studebaker or Mitchell Rossi's '57 Mercury convertible, Gene was the life of the party and always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. His athletic abilities and accomplishments are well know by those who knew him. What I remember most about him though was his friendship. 

     As popular as he was with all the kids at Horace Mann Jr. High, he always found the time to ride to school with me and push me from class to class while I was in a wheel chair for six months in the ninth grade with a broken leg. Also, I'll always remember the Saturday plate lunches at Paces, the late night sweet rolls and milk at Parks Cafe, and many many more fond memories of Gene. He was one of a kind and a great friend.

     Judy, I also remember the day he told me he was giving up his football scholarship at Lamar Tech to marry the love of his life. That was a defining moment in his life, and the best decision he ever made. You are an angel of mercy for the many years you stood by and took care of him. It was great to meet Steve , Gina, and your extended families at the celebration Monday. Take care and may God bless you and your families in this time of sorrow. I am so very saddened by Gene's passing.
I was not a close friend of his but went to Anson Jones, Horace Mann and RELee and knew of him my whole school life. I lived on High Street down from the schools.
Judy, you and I were classmates in High School. You may not remember me, but I do you and always thought a lot of you.  My 2nd husband of 24 yrs. is deceased 4 yrs, so I can relate to what you're experiencing now. He was also very ill for 6 yrs.
Your photos really showed a very loving family. My thoughts are with all of you.

Judy and Family,  It was my pleasure to attend Horace Mann and Robert E.Lee with Gene and to run with him on the track teams.  We who ran with him on the 1961 mile relay team will always cherish our joint accomplishment at the 1961 Texas Relays.  Our prayers go out to you in this time of grief. Just learned of Gene's passing. Sorry to have missed the celebration of his life today. From memories of growing up on Graham St to running into him at the UT vs UCLA game in Austin in 1969 after his first operation..then some lost years, but his smile and personality will not be forgotten. My brother, Ronnie worked with him at Lubrizol & spoke highly of him. I will pass the word on to Ronnie(now living in Kerville).

What can I say About Gene That has not been said, not alot. Gene and I were friends most of my life, knowing him from were he lived and the sports he played. And boy could he play Sports
I know some of us were good at one sport but Gene was good at any Sport he played. REL Had one of the best Track Teams with Gene that most of us in High School at time had ever seen.
Gene always had that Big Smile and was a True Friend. Gene was Great in Sports
but you would never know it by the way he acted. To me he was Just Gene a good Friend. To Gene's Family Be Asured
he is with our father in heaven where one day we will be with him.

Judy, I am saddened to hear about Gene.  He was a good friend to me back high school and at Lee College.     I can't tell you how many times I have thought about him in the last 20 yrs.   I just wish I had called him.  Ann (Leesemann) and I will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

I want Dorothy to know I would have been there for her but I have been to sick to make the trip.

Judy,I know how much you will miss Gene.
He was always a great friend to me. We both lived on Miriam Street in Baytown in our younger years. We had such a fun group in the neighborhood. Just a few that lived in our neighborhood was Ronnie Johnson, Winno Wallace, Sammy Masters, Nancy and Robert Holmes,and Johnny May. We all had a special friendship. I don't know what to say other than you know Gene was my best friend ever.  Although he is gone he will still be my best friend and those memories will never fade.  Gone but never forgotten!

I am so sorry for your loss. May the Lord surround all of you with his love and comfort in this time of need. Gene was a true, true friend who I could always count on. What a great part he played in my life, and I will never forget him. He always went out of his way to help others and was so proud of his family. He will truly be missed by so many. I know he is already up there running around that track and training football players. What a great, great guy he was! God bless you and yours.

 for close to 20 years all our kids loved Gene he allways had nice things to say and was very kind to all of us we will miss him  : ps Man he could make the best Brisket in the world and he was a charicter.

i have known this family over 30 yrs the best neighbors u could find we were always talking sports when the oilers played he loved to talk about earl campbell he was also interested in space exploration i still wear the atlantis shirt he gave me i also still have the gift him and mrs judy gave me for graduation you will truly be missed when i feel the breeze and the feeling like someone is there i know it's you watching over me i will miss u very much.Love and respect,

Gene was legendary in Baytown athletics.  He could play anything but was outstanding in basketball, football and track.  We were competitors in junior high, and I could not wait to play with him in high school.  I first met him on a joint bus trip (BJH & HMJH) to a track meet in Texas City.  He was just as we had heard: personable, handsome and energetic. We became good friends.  He will be missed by all who knew him, and I will never forget his smilling face and his natural athletic ability. My thoughts and condolences are with Judy and her family.

I knew Mr. Peacock for over 25 years because of my long friendship with Gina.  He always had a kind word to say to me and something to show me that he had acquired.  He was a good and interesting man and will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Judy and all your family, please accept my condolences during this difficult time.  I met Gene in 1957 when he officially ran over me on the Horace Mann football practice field.  He was a gift to us all and will be missed, but I have to believe that he is healed and rejoicing in heaven just waiting to see all of you again in the future.

So much to say about someone from your youth, with so little space, words, and time to give it proper justice. I regret that we had not connected at all in our adulthood until his final two years, but I will cherish those last, close days, always.  Condolences and deepest sympathies to his loving wife, Judy and family.

Gene was in my classroom from first grade through fourth grade.  He was by far the cutest guy in our room--his first grade picture is still imprinted in my mind.  I know what a loving wife you have been to Gene.  You have been there for him and you both endured to the end as we have all been commanded to do.  I wish you peace in knowing you gave him your all, Judy.  I know you will miss your high school sweetheart and long time love, but know that you will be reunited again.  My prayers are with you.

I went to Horace Mann Jr. High & Robert E. Lee High School with Gene. Am so sorry to hear of his long illness & ultimate passing. He was a great guy & I remember his smiles. My love & prayers to the family.
