George Meza lost his valiant struggle of the last several years on April 16, 2014. George was born in Laredo, Texas on February 27, 1948 and he spent his early years there. The family moved to La Porte in 1955 where George attended La Porte schools, graduating in 1966 and subsequently continuing his education at the University of Houston. After graduating with a B.A. degree in sociology and psychology from the University of Houston, George worked for Texas Child Protective Services for 17 years. In 1987, he joined the Harris County Adult Probation Department where he remained for 24 years until his retirement in 2011.
Preceded in death by his parents, Zaragoza A. Meza Sr. and Clemencia Garza Meza, oldest brother, Zach Meza, and only sister, Clemencia Sebesta, he is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Carol, of La Porte, sons Damian and Matthew, grandson Little Zach, brother Juan Meza of Houston, cousins Juan Sanmiguel of Houston and Lupe Gutiérrez of Dallas, and numerous brothers-in-law, cousins and friends.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, George embraced life to its fullest. During his early years, George had a particular fondness for building model cars – particularly models of the hottest hot rods of the 50’s which he would paint in blazing colors. In high school and during college, surfing became his passion and he, no doubt, “hanged 10” on more than one occasion. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Carol, at a local drive-inn. Married in March of 1970, George and Carol focused on getting their lives and careers started before moving on to proudly raising a family of two boys, Damian and Matthew. In 2006, George was blessed with his first grandchild, Little Zach, who became the apple of his eye.
George, you were an endless font of wit and humor. Your sarcasm was and is the stuff of legend bringing entire groups of people to their knees with laughter. You could find levity in the most mundane of situations. You could brighten the most dreary of days.
George, we shall deeply miss you. We shall miss your smile, your wit, your love, your friendship and your companionship. Although you will forever live in our hearts, we now have a void that can never be filled. George’s family expresses its deepest gratitude to Drs. Bedikian and Karp and the staff at M. D. Anderson for the supportive care provided during the last several years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in George’s memory to M.D. Anderson Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
A celebration of George’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 29th, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Grand View Funeral Home with reception following at George & Carol’s home at 4909 Archway in La Porte, Texas.
